Arevo produces 3D printed commuter bike using Hexcel carbon fibre material

Arevo has produced a 3D printed commuter bike using Hexcel Carbon Fibre material and its material extrusion technology which sees a robotic arm deposit material layer by layer.

Partnering with StudioWest, Arevo has created what it believes to be the world’s first true 3D-printed carbon fibre bicycle, and a reimagined form factor removed a seat stay between the seat and back wheel, adding strength and simplicity. The collaborators were able to produce this bike in fewer than 18 days, instead of the eighteen months it traditionally takes.

Arevo is based in Santa Clara, California, and is working to revolutionise the way manufactured products are conceived. It chose to implement this approach to the design of a commuter bicycle because it ‘captures the imagination’ and is something ‘most people can relate to.’ 

The resulting bike frame has a unique design, giving it standout aesthetics, and taking advantage of the structural and strengths attributes boasted by Arevo’s 3D printing technology. But Arevo was quick to credit the material suppliers for the success of this project. 

“It was great to have Hexcel join this project with us,” Arevo CEO Jim Miller said. “With companies like Hexcel as partners, we are certain that we have the technology, team and tools in place to commercialize our software and fabrication process to build high strength parts that the manufacturing industry hasn’t been able to conceive and construct before.â€�
